Carpetless

Phil and I have been working on a project around the house. We finally got grossed out by our carpet in our bedroom and the kids' rooms, so we decided we needed some more laminate. Remember we had it installed in the living room about a year and a half ago, and we really like it. We wanted the same stuff in the bedrooms, but couldn't really afford to have someone do it for us this time. Phil has installed hardwoods before, and we had both heard that laminate is a snap to do yourself, so we thought we would give it a try. We started in our room, the location of a large pink stain on my side of the bed from the time when our then-18-month-old daughter managed to open a full bottle of cherry Nyquil and dump it on the floor. We started on a Sunday afternoon, got half of it done that evening, finished the rest on Monday evening, and did the trim later in the week.

Nate's room was next, because we were going to wait on Amy's until we bought her new furniture and painted her walls. We managed to get his done in only two evenings, since we had a better idea of what we were doing, and it is also a lot smaller than our room. We did the flooring one night, and the trim the next night.
After finishing Nate's room, we had planned on waiting to do Amy's, but after I thought about it a little, I changed my mind. First, her carpet was the worst of any of ours, courtesy of the cats. They have gotten shut in there numerous times and used her closet as a litter box. Second, I was ready to just have the whole project FINISHED, rather than waiting until the fall and then starting up again. So we did her room. Same as Nate's, flooring one evening, trim the next.

We are very happy with the end results. We are also more than a little proud of ourselves for being able to do this by our ownselves, with only a couple of minor screw ups that aren't even noticeable. It was certainly a learning experience. The most important thing we learned is that with the next project, the kids will have to take a trip somewhere until it is done. They were sooooo helpful...
